I work with a lot of people who are brilliant at performing.
They know how to say the right thing, do the right thing, mask the chaos inside, and hold it all together when they’re falling apart.
They come into therapy thinking there’s a way to do it “right.”
They take notes.
They apologise when they cry.
They worry they’re “not progressing fast enough.”
They scan my face for approval.
They want to be good at therapy.
And it makes total sense.
Because we’ve all been taught, from school to social media, that being “good”, articulate, insightful, self-aware, regulated, earns safety and praise. And being messy, lost, or unsure means you’re failing.
But here’s the thing:
Therapy isn’t school. It’s not a job interview. It’s not a test. And it’s definitely not a performance.
It’s a space where the masks can drop.
Where there’s room for silence, stumbles, uncertainty, contradiction.
Where we unlearn the need to be tidy, perfect, and productive all the time.
When Therapy Becomes a Performance…
You might find yourself:
Overthinking what to say
Filtering your truth to “make sense” or “be impressive”
Avoiding topics you fear are boring, trivial, or shameful
Measuring your progress like a productivity app
Feeling low after sessions because you didn’t “do it right”
Thinking, “That was a waste of a session. I didn’t even say the thing I meant to.”
That last one comes up a lot.
It’s the voice of a strong inner critic, the part of you that demands visible, tidy progress, that wants therapy to be efficient, streamlined, and outcome-driven.
(This is not helped also if you have had therapy in NHS Talking Therapies or commissioned services where the implicit message is for efficient, streamlined and outcome driven therapy!!)
But often, those “waste of a session” moments are anything but.
They’re the space before something surfaces.
The avoidance that needs to be noticed.
The silence that says more than words.
The unconscious defences doing their job, until it’s safe to drop them.
Sometimes the most powerful work is the part you wanted to skip past.
And sometimes, I’ll mess it up too.
I won’t always get it right either.
I might misunderstand you, or miss something important, or reflect something that doesn’t land.
We might have a rupture, a moment that feels off, activating, or even painful.
And that’s not a sign therapy is failing, it’s often where real healing begins.
Because when we can name the rupture, when you can say, “that didn’t feel good” or “I left that session feeling worse”, and we work through it together, it creates something new in your system:
A space where honesty doesn’t lead to rejection.
Where discomfort is welcome.
Where repair is possible.
That’s the opposite of performance.
That’s relationship.
That’s therapy.
There’s no final exam here.
Therapy isn’t about reaching some shiny, neat destination where you’re “healed” and done and perfectly self-aware.
It’s a living, ongoing process of returning to yourself. Of softening the old strategies that once kept you safe. Of letting in support, even when it feels vulnerable.
You don’t have to get it right.
You don’t have to “work hard” at therapy to deserve support.
You just have to show up. As you are.
We’ll figure out the rest together, even when it’s messy, awkward, or you leave feeling unsure.
A gentle invitation

What are you trying to prove in therapy?
What parts of you feel like they don’t belong in the room?
What would it be like to bring those parts in, even just a little?
What if a “waste of a session” was actually a turning point waiting to be seen?
You don’t need to be perfect. You just need to be real.
If you’ve ever left a session thinking “I don’t know if I did that right,” or “that was pointless,” you’re not alone. But often, what feels like nothing is the doorway to something. We’re not aiming for constant breakthroughs. We’re aiming for honesty, presence, and safety, and that takes time.
